Press Freedom abuses continue in Greece while journalists are on strike

October 31, 2012 by pavlospapathanasiou

Following HOT DOC Magazine ‘s editor Kostas Vaxevanis arrest on Saturday after publishing the famous “Lagarde list” of 2.059 Greek politicians, journalists and businessmen who sent their money in Swiss bank accounts during the debt crisis, the censure of an ET3 State Channel reporter who commented on the strict police measures during the National Day celebrations (1) and more recently the temporary censure of  NET State Channel morning show presenters due their comments on Public Order Minister Dendias (2), a fourth consecutive abuse within five days comes as a shock for Greek media journalists and citizens.

Earlier this morning policemen arrested  Spyros Karatzaferis, a well known experienced journalist, famous for his revealing reports from the period of the Military Dictatorship (1967-1974) until nowadays . Karatzaferis despite being brother of the ultra nationalist and populist leader of the pro-Memorandum party  LAOS (Popular Orthodox Rally) , never denied his pro-left tendencies and has always been critical towards the governments of PASOK and Nea Dimokratia. Yesterday in his midnight TV show he revealed some facts about the deliberate deficit increase case of 2009, a case that is very embarrassing for the former Prime Minister Papandreou and for his failed Finance Minister Papakonstantinou; hence Karatzaferis regarded his arrest as a “political persecution” while he denounced the Police tactics since police officers were brutal towards him, despite his age. He added that the warrant  which policemen used to justify his arrest is invalid and preformed since it had to do with a case of 2005. He refused to pay the money penalty and instead he will prefer to be sent into prison, but this will not prevent him from his reports, which he will continue. “It is not the first time that I am sent to prison; the dictator’s regime did the same. The current situation somehow reminds me of that regime” said Karatzaferis during his interview for the news portal (3)

Spyros Karatzaferis arrest came on a day that Journalists’ Unions have chosen to hold a 24hour strike protesting for their insurance rights and against the consecutive Press Freedom abuses.
