Sharp increase of miscarriages’ rates in Greece is one of the crisis consequences, according to obstetricians and gynecologists. According to Dr. G. Kreatsas : “it appears that psychosomatic factors having to do with the financial crisis and the uncertainty are associated with the increase of miscarriages.”
Job insecurity, stress, family burdens, reductions in wages and increases in taxes are the main causes of the phenomenon; Hence miscarriages have almost tripled in the last two years as it was found in a survey conducted by doctors of University Hospital “Aretaieion” in Athens. During the the period September – February 2010, the percentage of resorptions of all births in the hospital was 1.5%. The corresponding figure for the period September 2011-February jumped to 4%.
